EU Life Sciences
Alison Brown is a partner in the firm's London office. She focuses her practice on product liability litigation and product safety matters. She also handles complex commercial and public law litigation in the UK and European courts. Alison handles both unitary claims and group actions and coordinates litigation throughout the UK and Europe. For more than 20 years, she has represented defendants in some of the major group actions brought in the UK.
Alison also advises on all aspects of regulatory compliance, including investigations and enforcement actions by UK regulatory agencies and defends companies and individuals against criminal prosecutions for alleged breach of regulatory requirements. She handles internal investigations in a wide range of areas including in relation to economic crimes.
Regulatory
- Part of a US/European team representing a Fortune 500 company in connection with an FCPA investigation involving the company's activities in over fifteen countries in Europe, the Middle East, and Central America and the company's self-reporting and ongoing cooperation with various agencies in the US and UK. Assisted various pharmaceutical companies in the context of regulatory investigations. Cases include criminal investigations relating to reporting obligations and the promotion/ advertising of medicinal products.
Commercial Litigation
- The Queen (on the application of the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry) v. Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency [2010] EUECJ C-62/09 - judicial review proceedings and reference to the European Court of Justice in Case C-62/09.
- Case C-368/96, R v Licensing Authority ex p. Generics[1998] ECR I 7967.
Product Liability
- Fetal Anticonvulsant Group Litigation (group litigation brought on behalf of children of mothers with epilepsy who alleged that they had sustained congenital abnormalities as a result of exposure to anti-epileptic medication during pregnancy: 2011).
- The Oral Contraceptive Group Litigation, XYZ & Others v. Schering Health Care Limited & Others [2002] EWHC 1420 (QB) (product liability group action arising from increased risk of thrombotic events allegedly associated with third generation combined oral contraceptives).
