The Professional Development Department of Arnold & Porter has an opening for a Manager of Professional Development in the Washington, DC office.  The Manager of Professional Development collaborates with the Director of Professional Development and attorneys to: develop and implement the firm’s core skills training, new associate training, and various practice group trainings; assist in the designing and delivering of firmwide professional skills training programs; provide oversight for the associate mentoring program in DC; oversee and evaluate PD Specialist and Coordinator; and design the content and manage the execution of various associate retreats.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • In collaboration with the Director of Professional Development, Professional Development Leaders and other attorneys, overseeing firmwide curriculum development and program design for various practice groups, including core skills training and specific subsections of the associate population (new associates, mid-levels, etc.)
  • Identifying internal and external speakers, providing input and guidance prior to program delivery and post-program feedback. 
  • Working with the technology teams to oversee the utilization of the firmwide Learning Management System and ensuring efficient and effective usage of the system.
  • Providing oversight of the firm’s Associate Shadowing Program.
  • Implementing strategic evaluations of each program that meet the needs of key MCLE jurisdictions, providing feedback for future sessions as well as aiding in the determination of ROI for each program.
  • As needed, identifying and implementing new technologies and methodologies to deliver professional development programs.
  • Further developing and enhancing the firmwide mentoring program for associates that support and promote skill development and personal growth.
  • Identifying trends that impact professional development and the legal industry as well as implementing, as appropriate, to enhance the effectiveness, efficiency and innovation within our programs.
  • Supervising the DC professional development team members and taking the lead on their overall development and evaluation.
  • Evaluating existing procedures for new attorney orientation and integration; making recommendations for areas that could be enhanced.
  • Providing resources and referrals regarding outside training programs and coordinating participation in activities with the practice groups.
  • Maintaining a master calendar database (accessible to all attorneys) of all training activities.  Working with the IT Department to develop mechanisms for disseminating curriculum information firmwide. 
  • Tracking participation in programs and obtaining regular feedback for evaluation.
  • Developing materials to “market” professional development activities internally and with recruits.
  • Keeping up-to-date on professional development initiatives through literature, seminars, conferences, and membership in appropriate professional organizations.  Participating in professional development organizations.
  • Preparing and monitoring a budget for DC office development activities. 


  • Bachelor’s degree required; JD preferred.   
  • Minimum of six (6) years of professional development experience in the legal industry.
  • Experience in the design and execution of adult education and programs, including working knowledge of adult learning methodologies. 
  • Prior managerial experience.
  • Proficiency in a range of computer software applications, including the MS Office, Access and vi Desktop.  
  • Exceptional judgment, flexibility and professionalism, and the ability to lead effectively while being a team player.
  • Professional presence, strong presentation, interpersonal, management and problem solving skills.  
  • Ability to lead and direct the work of others.
  • Ability to make sound decisions and demonstrate a high degree of trustworthiness in handling confidential and sensitive information.
  • Ability to strategically maintain financial/budgetary information.
  • Ability to be a change agent and drive new firm initiatives.
  • Ability to demonstrate strategic focus.
  • Ability to define goals and follow though to achieve results.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage time effectively.
  • Excellent organization and communications skills, both oral and written.

  • Exceptional client service both internal and external. 
  • Flexibility to travel to other offices and work additional hours, as necessary.
