“Blurred Lines” copyright infringement appeal

Heirs of Marvin Gaye
2016 - 2018

In a highly publicized case, the heirs of Marvin Gaye sued Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams for copyright infringement over their song “Blurred Lines.” After a seven-day trial in which the jury sided with the heirs, Arnold & Porter was engaged as co-counsel to defend the verdict on post-trial motions and handle the appeal. Arnold & Porter argued the case before the Ninth Circuit, and in March 2018 the Court upheld the verdict against Thicke and Williams.
