DOJ investigation of domain name registration business

Network Solutions Inc.
1997 - 1999

Commencing in 1997, the Department of Justice initiated an antitrust investigation of Network Solutions, which was then the sole registry and registrar for Internet domain names in the .com, .net, and .org top-level domains. After the US government decided to privatize oversight of the domain name system and to introduce competition at the registrar level, it entered into a new agreement with Network Solutions and the antitrust investigation was subsequently closed without any enforcement action.
