Jungermann Discusses EU-US Privacy Shield at Licensing Executives Society Event

Frankfurt-based Antitrust partner Sebastian Jungermann spoke to the Licensing Executives Society Working-Group Life Sciences in Hamburg on November 4, 2016, to address the new EU-US Privacy Shield, a framework for transatlantic exchanges of personal data for commercial purposes between the European Union and the US. Jungermann discussed the framework’s background, context and implementation, with a special focus on life sciences-related data transfers into the US. 

The EU-US Privacy Shield imposes strong obligations on US companies to better protect Europeans’ personal data. It reflects the requirements of the European Court of Justice, which ruled the previous International Safe Harbor Privacy Principles structure invalid in October 2015. The Privacy Shield requires the US government to monitor and enforce the new framework, and also provides a set of robust and enforceable protections for the personal data of European individuals.
