Ryan Groshong is a member of the firm’s Labor & Employment practice. As a trial lawyer, he defends employers in a variety of claims, including discrimination, harassment, wrongful termination, retaliation, and wage and hour violations. He also litigates civil rights claims, high value personal injury actions, and a broad range of complex commercial matters, including contractual disputes, product liability claims, and enforcement of restrictive covenants.

Ryan has significant first chair jury trial experience and has successfully tried several cases to verdict. He represents a broad range of clients, including public and private companies, governmental entities, philanthropic organizations, and individuals.In addition to his litigation practice, he frequently represents clients in private arbitration and before administrative agencies. Ryan further advises clients on personnel and other issues, particularly on matters involving litigation risk.

Ryan maintains an active pro bono practice and has represented asylum seekers, nonprofit organizations, and incarcerated individuals pursuing innocence claims.

During law school, Ryan worked as a judicial extern for the Honorable Charles W. Johnson of the Washington State Supreme Court, a legal extern for The Defender Association, and a legal intern for the Mexican Capital Legal Assistance Program.

Experience

  • A municipality as first chair defense counsel in a jury trial in which long-term employee alleged retaliation and wrongful termination in violation of public policy claims, seeking $13 million in damages. Won on all claims with a unanimous jury verdict.*
  • A municipality as first chair defense counsel in a jury trial in which employee alleged retaliation claims and sought seven figures in damages. Won on all claims with a unanimous jury verdict.*
  • A municipality as co-lead defense counsel in case in which more than 50 plaintiffs brought personal injury and civil rights claims arising out of protest events. Settled on favorable terms following years of complex and contentious discovery.*
  • A municipality as lead defense counsel in high-profile personal injury action. Settled on favorable terms after Court of Appeals Commissioner held that trial court committed “obvious error” in denying municipality’s motion for summary judgment.*
  • A soft drink manufacturer in consolidated employment discrimination actions in which six plaintiffs alleged discrimination, harassment, retaliation, negligent supervision, and loss of consortium. Obtained summary judgment dismissing all claims.*
  • Mayor of a municipality in defense of a recall petition. The Washington Supreme Court unanimously dismissed the petition.*
