Los Angeles Counterfeiting and Piracy Awareness Week
Arnold & Porter LLP is partnering with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in support of its Los Angeles Counterfeiting and Piracy Awareness Week, Monday, August 20 – Thursday, August 23, 2007. The week, part of a broader, long-term US Chamber Model City Initiative to make Los Angeles a model city on the protection of intellectual property rights, will feature educational and media events throughout the Los Angeles area focusing on the costs and health and safety threats of counterfeiting and piracy. Each day's events will address a specific topic including the impact of this growing problem on California's motion picture, apparel, software, music and pharmaceutical industries, as well as its impact on small and medium sized businesses.
Lawyers from Arnold & Porter's Los Angeles and New York offices have played a key role in helping the US Chamber organize the week and help shape its model city agenda, which sets forth the steps that both the city of Los Angeles and the state of California need to take to truly become a model city and state in the protection of intellectual property rights. The Arnold & Porter team includes, in Los Angeles, office chair and partner Ronald Johnston, partner Suzy Wilson and in New York, partner Lou Ederer and associate John Maltbie. Mr. Ederer and Mr. Maltbie are actively involved in the U.S. Chamber's Coalition Against Counterfeiting and Piracy, a coalition of more than 380 businesses and associations, representing a wide range of industries and interests, and Mr. Ederer currently chairs the coalition's Detection and Enforcement Task Force.
As part of the week's events, Ms. Wilson will be speaking on a panel at the Counterfeiting and Piracy Town Hall on Thursday, August 23. The panel will also include representatives from the music, film and software industries, and will be moderated by Representative Howard Berman and Representative Diane Watson. This day's event will focus on the impact of counterfeiting and piracy on the content community. The Counterfeiting and Piracy Town Hall will be held at the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood from 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. This and all other events during the week are complimentary.
