Lisa Re Talks HHS Fraud Enforcement with Report on Medicare Compliance
Lisa Re, Arnold & Porter Life Sciences & Healthcare Regulatory partner and former Assistant Inspector General for Legal Affairs at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Inspector General (OIG), was quoted in the Report on Medicare Compliance article, “Exclusions May Climb as HHS Expands Authority to CMS; HHS Pauses $1B in Medicaid Payments,” discussing several HHS announcements at its press conference on July 21, 2026.
Regarding the department’s decision to pause more than $1 billion in federal Medicaid payments to California and Minnesota, Lisa emphasized the significance of the move.
“This should get everyone’s attention,” she said. “It seems they are using every tool at their disposal to make the point they demand proper payments.”
She also highlighted HHS-OIG’s announcement that it is reviewing the performance of all state Medicaid Fraud Control Units (MFCUs), emphasizing that providers submitting Medicaid claims should use this as an opportunity to conduct their own risk assessments.
“Enforcement in Medicaid is a top priority for this administration,” Lisa said. “This is the time to invest in internal auditing.”
