January 29, 2009

SAN FRANCISCO, January 29, 2009 -- Arnold & Porter LLP announced today that Karen Nardi has joined the firm's environmental practice as a partner in San Francisco. Ms. Nardi, who focuses on environmental counseling and enforcement, will spearhead the firm's West Coast environmental regulatory practice, extending the reach of Arnold & Porter's national environmental group and expanding the firm's presence in San Francisco.

"As one of the state's most respected environmental lawyers, Karen is a welcome addition to our team," said Trent Norris, head of the San Francisco office. "Her compliance practice complements our West Coast environmental litigation talent and broadens our ability to serve the firm's clients on key California environmental health and safety issues." A poll published by GC California magazine in December of 2008 named Ms. Nardi the top environmental compliance attorney in California.

Ms. Nardi's practice has a regulatory focus in the areas of environmental and health and safety issues. She advises on federal and state enforcement actions and administrative proceedings; site clean-ups; environmental due diligence; Brownfields; environmental insurance coverage; and health and safety audits. She has experience with the Occupational Safety and Health Act, the Clean Air Act, and the Toxic Substances Control Act, as well as a variety of federal and state laws that govern remediation and disposal of hazardous and radioactive wastes and asbestos.

"This is a great opportunity to expand my practice, working with a top-notch team of litigators and regulatory lawyers," said Ms. Nardi. "I'm very excited to be joining a firm of Arnold & Porter's stature, with its strong national environmental practice and tradition of excellence, client service, diversity, and pro bono. Arnold & Porter has a dynamic, growing San Francisco office with some very talented, entrepreneurial partners and I look forward to becoming a part of this team."

Ms. Nardi has a law degree from the University of California's Boalt Hall and a master's degree in public policy from the University of California at Berkeley. She served as a law clerk to Judge William Schwarzer of the US District Court of San Francisco. She is co-author of several books, including the Environmental Law Handbook (Government Institutes, 2007). Ms. Nardi also has been regularly ranked for environmental law in The Best Lawyers in America and Super Lawyers in Northern California. She has twice been named in the Super Lawyers list of Northern California's "Top 50 Women."

The addition of Ms. Nardi continues the firm's expansion on the West Coast, extending the reach of the firm's core practice areas. In March of 2008, a team of three partners led by Mr. Norris, and including Angel Garganta and Monty Agarwal, joined the San Francisco office. Their practices, which focus on consumer class actions, intellectual property, product liability and environmental matters, complement the firm's existing practices in other offices in the United States and Europe. Joining later in the year were high-profile IP litigator Beth Parker (San Francisco), trademark lawyer Diane Lambillotte (Los Angeles), and consumer protection and product liability lawyer Sarah Esmaili (San Francisco). The growing San Francisco team works closely with more than 60 lawyers based in Los Angeles to meet the California needs of a diverse base of local, national, and international clients.
