Arnold & Porter Partner Named to the Daily Journal's 2014 'Top Intellectual Property Attorneys' List
LOS ANGELES, May 14, 2014 --The Daily Journal has named Arnold & Porter LLP partner John Ulin to it 2014 list of Top Intellectual Property Lawyers in California recognizing his first-chair experience in a number of cases whose outcomes may have a significant impact nationally as well as on the West Coast.
The California legal industry newspaper cited Mr. Ulin’s recent representation on behalf of the three major television networks against purveyors of new technology to stream TV shows directly to individual viewers over the Internet. On February 19, Mr. Ulin secured the first preliminary injunction against the technology’s developer, Aereo Inc., for a local Utah broadcaster.
The win is “especially significant,” said the editors, because the question of how copyright law should deal with Aereo’s technology was argued before the U.S. Supreme Court on April 22. Mr. Ulin, the newspaper noted, also helped win closely-watched injunctions in Los Angeles and Washington, DC for the major networks against an Aereo competitor.
In another potentially impactful licensing dispute, the Daily Journal cited Mr. Ulin’s representation of Saul Zaentz Co.’s claim under a decades-old licensing agreement to use “Lord of the Rings” material in online video games.
In addition, the publication pointed to the Los Angeles-based attorney’s pro bono role as lead counsel last November in the first trial under the federal Voting Rights Act, after the U.S. Supreme Court significantly limited the statute in a 2012 decision.
