Arnold & Porter Receives CAIR Coalition's 2014 'Law Firm Partner of the Year' Award

October 27, 2014

Arnold & Porter recently received the Capital Area Immigrants' Rights (CAIR) Coalition's 2014 "Law Firm Partner of the Year" award in recognition of "the firm's outstanding commitment to helping ensure that detained immigrants have access to legal representation" in the D.C. metropolitan area.

In 2013-2014, Arnold & Porter attorneys and staff made a substantial commitment to CAIR Coalition matters. One illustrative representation by the firm cited during the award presentation involved a Nicaraguan woman who had been subjected to severe domestic abuse for years before she fled to the U.S. The client later went back to Nicaragua to protect her oldest child who was also being maltreated; but, when she tried to return to the U.S., she was jailed for two years by the US government, while it sought her deportation. After a trial in Immigration Court led by a team of Arnold & Porter attorneys, the judge ordered her release.

According to CAIR Coalition, Arnold & Porter also stood out for its support of CAIR Coalition's Legal Advisory Committee (LAC). Chaired by Arnold & Porter's Lawrence Schneider, the Coalition noted, the LAC has "grown significantly in the past several years as it brought on new members and expanded its role" in helping the Coalition serve as the primary source of legal assistance for detained immigrants here.
