Former FDA Senior Regulatory and Policy Counsel Bryant Godfrey Joins Arnold & Porter
WASHINGTON, DC, June 12, 2018 — Arnold & Porter announced today that Bryant M. Godfrey, former Senior Regulatory Counsel in the US Food and Drug Administration's Centers for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER) and Tobacco Products (CTP), and former Senior Counsel/Special Assistant to the Deputy Commissioner for Medical Products and Tobacco, has joined the firm as counsel. Mr. Godfrey will be part of the firm's leading Life Sciences and Healthcare Regulatory practice, resident in the firm's Washington, DC office.
During his tenure at the US Food and Drug Administration from 2009 - 2018, Mr. Godfrey handled a wide variety of legal issues and regulatory policy matters for both medical and tobacco products, and wrote, contributed to, and managed the agency clearance of various regulations, guidance documents, and other regulatory documents. He also directed special projects, studies, and activities of concern for the FDA Commissioner and/or Deputy Commissioner for Medical Products and Tobacco.
While at CDER, Mr. Godfrey was senior lead regulatory counsel in the Office of Prescription Drug Promotion (OPDP), where he oversaw the regulatory counsel team and advised the office on a wide range of complex legal, regulatory, and policy matters relating to the promotion of prescription drug products. While in OPDP, Mr. Godfrey authored and co-authored several guidance documents relating to prescription drug promotion, the distribution of scientific and medical publications on unapproved new uses, off-label communications, and social media; and helped the office respond to various First Amendment challenges brought by regulated industry.
Mr. Godfrey was recognized with an FDA Commissioner's Group Recognition Award for his involvement with the Bad Ad program, and an FDA/CTP Collaboration Award for his efforts working with and coordinating multiple agency components during the development of the tobacco product jurisdiction rule.
Mr. Godfrey earned his JD and Health Law Certificate from Saint Louis University School of Law, where he served as editor of the Journal of Health Law. He received his MHA, with distinction, from Saint Louis University, and his BA from Washington University in Saint Louis.
