Associate Justice Rosalyn Richter Joins Arnold & Porter in New York

NEW YORK, NY, October 12, 2020 — Arnold & Porter announced today that The Honorable Rosalyn Richter has joined the firm's Complex Litigation practice as senior counsel, resident in New York.

"During her tenure as an appellate judge, Rosalyn authored hundreds of judicial opinions on every aspect of New York law," said Arnold & Porter Complex Litigation group co-chair James Herschlein. "She is highly regarded by the Bar and her wealth of experience will be of great benefit to our clients."

Judge Richter most recently served as an Associate Justice in the Appellate Division of the New York Supreme Court, First Department, a position to which she was appointed in 2009. She began her career as Executive Director for Lambda Legal Defense & Education Fund before joining the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office. Earlier in her career, Judge Richter was appointed as Administrative Law Judge, New York City Office of Administrative Trials and Hearings. During the next two decades, Judge Richter served on various courts in New York, including as Criminal Court Judge, New York County; Deputy Supervising Judge, Acting Supreme Court Judge, and Supervising Judge, Bronx Criminal Court; Supreme Court Judge, New York County, Criminal Term; and Supreme Court Judge, New York County, Civil Term.

In her roles on the bench and in academia, Judge Richter is regarded as a leader in the LGBTQ community and has been particularly involved in establishing equal protection and ensuring civil rights. Judge Richter has received the Dan Bradley Award, the national LGBT Bar Association's highest honor, in recognition of her pathbreaking legacy of service. Judge Richter served as co-chair of the New York City Bar Association Committee to Enhance Diversity in the Profession and as chair of the Diversity in the Judiciary Subcommittee. She also has received an award for Advancement of Judicial Diversity from the New York State Bar Association.

An adjunct professor at Columbia Law School where she teaches a seminar titled "Access to Justice," Judge Richter has also established an externship through the law school in partnership with Sanctuary for Families to represent victims of domestic violence.

Judge Richter earned her JD from Brooklyn Law School and BA from Barnard College.
