December 13, 2021

The Washington Council of Lawyers, a voluntary bar association promoting pro bono and public-interest law, awarded Arnold & Porter's commitment to pro bono work with its 2021 Law Firm Award. The Washington Council of Lawyers Award Ceremony, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, recognizes the outstanding contributions of lawyers who perform pro bono and public-interest work.

The firm’s commitment to pro bono as a core value and a defining characteristic of a great law firm is “a vision that the leaders at Arnold & Porter live out every day,” said The Washington Council of Lawyers. “From the work of Abe Fortas on Gideon v. Wainwright, to the Buffalo Creek Disaster, to handling death penalty cases, voting rights cases, and assisting people with unemployment claims during COVID-19, the firm’s broad scope and deep commitment to pro bono are breathtaking.”

Arnold & Porter has been actively involved with the organization for over 40 years and the firm’s attorneys have served in leadership positions including president, treasurer, and secretary, as well as chairing numerous committees. As such, The Washington Council of Lawyers commended that “pro bono is a fundamental part of the firm’s culture, values, and history.”

The Washington Council of Lawyers Law Firm award is the most recent accolade the firm has received this year for its dedication to pro bono work. Earlier this year, the firm was named a top-10 firm on The American Lawyer’sPro Bono Scorecard” for both national and international pro bono work. After providing more than 121,000 hours of pro bono service in 2020, Arnold & Porter was named a "60 at 50" Pro Bono Leader by the DC Circuit Judicial Conference Standing Committee on Pro Bono Legal Services for having 60% or more of attorneys contributing 50 or more hours of pro bono service during the year. Additionally, 257 firm attorneys were named to the DC Courts 2020 Honor Roll for donating 50 hours or more of pro bono service during 2020. Arnold & Porter lawyers handle a diverse array of pro bono matters that demonstrate the firm’s commitment to achieving equal access to justice and the rule of law.
