July 18, 2023

NEW YORK, NY, July 18, 2023 — Arnold & Porter announced today that Judge Joseph A. Greenaway, Jr., who recently stepped down from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, will join the firm as a partner in September. He will be a member of Arnold & Porter’s Appellate & Supreme Court, Complex Litigation, and White-Collar practices, and will be resident in New York.

In welcoming Judge Greenaway, Richard M. Alexander, Chairman of Arnold & Porter, commented: “Judge Greenaway has had an extremely distinguished career on the bench, in academia, as a federal prosecutor, in-house counsel, and in private practice. During his tenure as a judge on the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey and the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, he earned a reputation as a fair and precise jurist with an unwavering passion for the law.”

Paul J. Fishman, head of Arnold & Porter’s Newark office and the firm’s Crisis Management and Strategic Response team, added: “I am thrilled that Judge Greenaway is joining Arnold & Porter. He is an extremely thoughtful and measured lawyer with excellent judgment. He is a beloved and respected figure among his colleagues on the bench and in the bar, and his experience will add a wonderful and unique dimension to the firm’s sophisticated and accomplished litigation team.”

Nominated by President Bill Clinton, Judge Greenaway served for more than 13 years on the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey. In 2010, President Barack Obama elevated Judge Greenaway to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, where he served until last month. Earlier in his career, Judge Greenaway was an Assistant United States Attorney for the District of New Jersey, and held the post of Chief of Narcotics. Following his tenure as a federal prosecutor, and before he went on the bench, Judge Greenaway was an in-house counsel at Johnson & Johnson.

During his time on the bench, Judge Greenaway has been heavily involved in academia. He is a lecturer at Harvard Law School and an Adjunct Professor at Yeshiva University’s Cardozo School of Law, where he teaches courses on trial practice and appellate advocacy. He previously served as an Adjunct Professor at Columbia College and Rutgers School of Law. He remains a member of the Columbia University Board of Trustees.

In joining the firm, Judge Greenaway commented: “I have admired the lawyers at Arnold & Porter for years. The firm has extraordinary appellate, civil, and criminal litigators with well-deserved reputations for successfully handling complex, high-profile cases. It is also a firm with a spectacular commitment to pro bono work, and I hope that my experience can bring a significant additional dimension to all of that work.”

Judge Greenaway earned his J.D. from Harvard Law School and his B.A. from Columbia University. He began his legal career as a litigation associate in private practice and clerked for the late Hon. Vincent L. Broderick of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.

Judge Greenaway has received a variety of awards throughout his career, including the New Jersey Corporate Counsel Association’s Distinguished Service Award, the Columbia University Medal of Excellence, the Garden State Bar Association’s Distinguished Jurist Award, the Columbia University Alumni Medal, Columbia College’s John Jay Award, and the Association of the Federal Bar of New Jersey’s William J. Brennan, Jr. Award.
