Daily Journal Recognizes Douglas Winthrop in 2026 ‘Leading Commercial Litigators’ Report

April 1, 2026

Arnold & Porter Intellectual Property partner Doug Winthrop has been named to the Daily Journal’s 2026 “Leading Commercial Litigators” report. The annual feature profiles attorneys who have built careers handling “bet-the-company” cases.

In his profile, Daily Journal highlighted Doug’s 35 years of experience “navigating some of the most consequential commercial disputes in the country.” Doug also reflected on his path into law and how early mentorship shaped his approach, including “looking at problems from multiple angles, thinking hard and early about arguments and approaches that will resonate, doggedly pursuing a strategy and, at the same time, being willing to reassess strategic choices as necessary.”

Doug also discussed his recent representation of Anthropic in defending against copyright infringement claims brought by a class of book authors. He led the Arnold & Porter team in securing a favorable ruling that “the company’s use of purchased and scanned books for AI training constituted fair use — the first such ruling by a U.S. court on generative AI model training.”
