Hanswirth Quoted in Law360 on Defamation Coverage

Intellectual Property partner and TMT industry group co-head Dori Hanswirth was quoted in a recent Law360 article, “Depp-Heard Dispute Turns Spotlight On Defamation Coverage.” The article discusses how the high-profile Depp-Heard defamation case has brought attention to defamation insurance, specifically whether homeowners policies cover defamation claims based on allegations from social media posts.

Hanswirth told Law360 that defamation is often covered under homeowners and umbrella policies. Still, policyholders may face coverage challenges because defending and paying out damages in libel cases has become more expensive for insurance companies, and some insurance carriers believe it is no longer worthwhile to cover defamation under such policies. Hanswirth added that this isn’t a problem that will away on its own.
