Former DOJ Deputy Assistant Attorney General for Civil and Criminal Operations Sonia Pfaffenroth to Rejoin the Firm

May 15, 2017

WASHINGTON, DC, May 15, 2017 -- Arnold & Porter Kaye Scholer announced today that Sonia Pfaffenroth, former Deputy Assistant Attorney General for Civil and Criminal Operations for the Antitrust Division at the US Department of Justice (DOJ), will rejoin the firm's Washington office as a partner in September 2017.

As Deputy Assistant Attorney General for Civil and Criminal Operations, Ms. Pfaffenroth was responsible for supervising both civil and criminal enforcement efforts as well as the Division's legal policy and international sections. She oversaw a number of the Division's most significant matters, including the Division's challenge to the Anthem/Cigna and Aetna/Humana mergers and the American Express litigation. She also worked closely with the Foreign Commerce Section on the Division's international program, and with the Legal Policy Section on competition advocacy efforts. She previously served as Deputy Assistant Attorney General for Civil Enforcement at the Antitrust Division and Chief of Staff to former Assistant Attorney General for Antitrust Bill Baer, who recently announced that he will rejoin Arnold & Porter Kaye Scholer on June 1.

"Sonia is an outstanding lawyer who made major contributions in every position she held in the Antitrust Division at Justice," said Mr. Baer. "She quickly won the confidence of the career staff at the Justice Department with her smarts, her work ethic, and her deep understanding of antitrust. The firm is delighted to welcome her back. I look forward to once again being on her team."

Jonathan Gleklen, Head of Arnold & Porter Kaye Scholer's Antitrust practice, said: "We are delighted to have Sonia rejoin us. She was a highly regarded colleague before her government service, and her leadership role at the Justice Department has only enhanced the value she will bring to clients. Her experience with difficult antitrust issues, civil and criminal, is remarkable."

In rejoining her former law firm, Ms. Pfaffenroth stated: "I am thrilled to return home to the firm and its collegial band of top-notch antitrust lawyers. I look forward to once again working with Bill Baer, Jon Gleklen, and all of our extraordinarily talented colleagues. I am confident that the experience I gained during my time at DOJ will benefit clients facing complex antitrust issues in the US and globally."

Ms. Pfaffenroth joined Arnold & Porter in 2005 after clerking for Judge Paul Friedman of the US District Court for the District of Columbia and became partner in 2012. In 2013, Ms. Pfaffenroth joined the Antitrust Division, first serving as Senior Counsel and then as Chief of Staff to former Assistant Attorney General Bill Baer. In 2015, Ms. Pfaffenroth was named DOJ's Deputy Assistant Attorney General for Civil Enforcement, and in 2016 she became Deputy Assistant Attorney General for Civil and Criminal Operations.

Ms. Pfaffenroth received her JD from Stanford Law School and her BA from Carleton College.
