Alvaro J. Peralta advises and represents sovereign and commercial clients in complex, high-stakes international disputes. His practice focuses on public international law, international commercial and treaty arbitration, and complex international commercial litigation.
Alvaro is experienced in representing clients from nearly all geographic regions in matters involving the energy, construction, and mining industries, public-private infrastructure projects, environmental protection issues, allegations of corruption and other forms of illegality, cross-border commercial contracts, national security, and other disputes arising under multilateral treaties. Alvaro has represented clients in arbitrations applying the ICSID, UNCITRAL, ICDR-AAA, and ICC Rules.
Before joining Arnold & Porter, Alvaro served in the United States Department of State, where he advised on litigation matters involving international law and foreign relations, and liaised with senior officials of the Justice Department, the National Security Council, and the Office of White House Counsel. He also represented the United States before international courts, including the International Court of Justice, the Iran-U.S. Claims Tribunal, and investment treaty tribunals, and advised the State Department on international legal issues arising in the areas of claims settlement, sovereign and diplomatic immunity, and the intersection of U.S. and international law. Alvaro received the State Department’s Superior Honor Award in recognition of his contributions.
Prior to his work at the State Department, Alvaro worked at a leading international law firm in Washington, D.C and Paris, France, at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and the World Bank.
Alvaro is committed to pro bono service, having litigated before the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, advised non-governmental and inter-governmental organizations, and provided direct representation to asylum seekers.
