Isabella F. Uría

Senior Associate

Isabella Uría advises and represents sovereign and commercial clients in complex, high-stakes international disputes. She has represented sovereigns in multiple State-to-State disputes before the International Court of Justice, and in investment treaty arbitrations administered by ICSID and the Permanent Court of Arbitration. Isabella also represents State-owned entities (SOEs) and multinational corporations in international commercial arbitrations, applying the UNCITRAL, ICDR-AAA, and ICC Rules. Isabella further represents clients in proceedings for the enforcement/set-aside of arbitral awards before U.S. federal courts.

Isabella is a resource to clients long before disputes arise, proactively assessing their rights and obligations under international law and developing strategies to mitigate potential areas of dispute before they escalate. Clients have recognized the value of Isabella's counsel in helping them navigate intricate legal and technical issues to avoid costly and protracted litigation.

Isabella is experienced in representing clients from nearly all geographic regions in matters involving the renewable, nuclear, and traditional energy industries, public-private infrastructure projects, bankruptcy/insolvency proceedings, foreign tax treatment, environmental protection issues, allegations of corruption and other forms of illegality, cross-border commercial contracts, national boundary delimitation, the law of the sea, and other disputes arising under multilateral treaties.

Isabella is committed to pro bono service, having litigated before regional human-rights courts and tribunals, advised non-governmental and inter-governmental organizations, and provided direct representation to asylum seekers.

Prior to joining Arnold & Porter, Isabella practiced at another international law firm in Washington, D.C., before which she served as Assistant Legal Counsel at the Permanent Court of Arbitration.
