Fishman Named to The National Law Journal’s 2021 'Crisis Leadership Trailblazers' Report

September 10, 2021

Arnold & Porter partner Paul J. Fishman, who heads the firm’s Crisis Management and Strategic Response team, was named to The National Law Journal’s 2021 list of “Crisis Leadership Trailblazers.” The special supplement recognizes professionals whose work demonstrates a track record successfully steering clients through complicated and challenging high-profile matters.

The National Law Journal highlighted Fishman’s work for the Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation, a long-term care facility that suffered a deadly viral outbreak in 2018. Fishman conducted an independent review of the facility's response; oversaw the institution’s response to regulatory, legislative, and law enforcement inquiries; represented the facility in administrative litigation with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services; and coordinated the overall response to the media and numerous elected and appointed public officials.

Fishman harnessed that experience in 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic overwhelmed the long-term care industry across New Jersey. Familiar with the regulatory framework, knowledgeable about the industry, and conversant with infection control and viral spread, Fishman was able to “anticipate the regulatory and legal challenges the industry would face” during a pandemic. As a result, he has represented numerous facilities in connection with their responses to regulatory inquiries by NJDOH and CMS, as well as more in-depth investigations by law enforcement officials. He also was retained by the state’s largest trade group to advise on the industry’s overall strategy and response to the pandemic.

Fishman, who served as United States Attorney for the District of New Jersey prior to joining the firm, was also named to New Jersey Law Journal’s inaugural list of “New Jersey Trailblazers” in 2019.
