Media Relations Specialist

The Marketing Department of Arnold & Porter has an opening for a Media Relations Specialist in the Washington, DC office.
The Media Relations Specialist is a full-time position focusing on a range of media relations activities that enhance the visibility of and promotion of the firm, its practices, and individual attorneys. The Media Relations Specialist supports the firm’s national and regional media needs to increase visibility in target markets. The Specialist will work closely with the Media Relations and Business Development teams to implement profile-raising efforts and initiatives, including writing and editing content for a variety of outlets; ensuring the firm’s house style and editorial guidelines are implemented; drafting news and recognition items on the website and intranet; tracking and circulating press coverage; and assisting with quarterly ROI reports.
A strong familiarity with AI-powered tools and willingness to learn new applications is vital in this role. The ideal candidate will use AI technologies to enhance efficiency in daily tasks, optimize media outreach, decipher news coverage and trends, assist with content strategy and creation, and gather insights to support the firm's media strategy. The Specialist will provide some support to marketing awards and recognitions and contribute to other special projects as assigned.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Drafting news items and press releases on major firm initiatives, lateral hires, client wins, and firm recognitions and awards.
- Developing compelling story ideas.
- Pitching tailored story ideas to national and trade publications that elevate firm initiatives and attorney expertise across key industries.
- Pitching and coordinating attorney-authored articles in key target publications.
- Developing reporter backgrounders to help the Media Relations team and attorneys with reporter roundtables, meet-and-greets, and interviews.
- Strategically developing targeted media lists by identifying appropriate target reporters and publications.
- Contributing to quarterly ROI reports using data visualization tools and analytics to provide deeper insights into media outreach and coverage, including share of voice, impact, and competitive landscape.
- Serving as point of contact for obtaining editorial corrections, securing reprint rights, and otherwise coordinating with external publications.
- Working in Meltwater, Roxhill, and similar platforms with a strong understanding of how to maximize AI functionality within each tool to enhance strategic outreach.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree (degree in marketing, communications, or journalism preferred).
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience in public relations and/or communications, with a strong emphasis on writing, editing, and project management.
- Familiarity with AI-powered tools and platforms for PR and communications (e.g. media monitoring, content generation, and predictive analytics).
- Ability to integrate AI tools into daily workflows to generate new strategic insights.
- Law firm or professional services firm experience preferred.
- Working knowledge of legal directories highly desired.
- Ability to use Internet sources required.
- Knowledge of PR/Media tools including Meltwater.
- Proficiency in Windows operating systems and Microsoft Office Suite and/or related software.
- Ability to exhibit good judgment when interacting with attorneys and media/publishing companies.
- Strong project management skills.
- Ability to work comfortably with attorneys at all levels.
- Ability to effectively coordinate collection of information and data from multiple sources.
- Ability to make sound decisions and demonstrate a high degree of trustworthiness in handling confidential and sensitive information.
- Ability to exhibit sound judgment interacting with attorneys and media/publishing companies.
The anticipated base salary for this position is $72,000 to $85,000. The actual base salary offered will depend on a variety of factors, including without limitation, the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and if applicable, the location in which the applicant lives and/or from which they will be performing the job.
