The Marketing Department of Arnold & Porter has an immediate opening for a Media Relations Manager.  This position may be located in the New York or Washington, DC office.  The Manager is responsible for increasing visibility around our core Industry Groups and leading practices by building additional awareness of our key partners, capabilities and unique offerings at the intersection of regulatory, litigation and transactional expertise.

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of eight (8) years of media relations and communications experience, preferably with a law firm, media outlet, or professional services organization. This individual is passionate about media relations, extraordinarily proactive and self-motivated, highly comfortable working with and counseling firm partners and senior-level staff, and eager to join a fast-paced team that works on some of the highest profile, most exciting issues.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • As a member of the Media Relations team; helps to create, develop, plan and execute communications strategies, leveraging AI-driven tools and analytics to optimize outreach efforts.
  • Obtains placements in appropriate media outlets, based on strategic plans and proactive opportunities, that will raise visibility of the firm and its Industry Groups/practice areas and partners in the media.
  • Develops and cultivates relationships with appropriate press contacts at relevant legal, business, policy, and technology publications. To include international, national and regional media.
  • Develops effective relationships with partners earning their trust and respect and ability to collaborate on proactive media opportunities.
  • Prepares partners for media interviews and actively participates in meetings with key reporters; ability to provide partners with substantive feedback following media interview.
  • Writes communication materials such as press releases, media pitches, pre-briefing documents, etc.
  • Develops and delivers high-visibility competitive analysis reports.
  • Works closely with Business Development and Brand/Editorial Content teams to identify areas of cross collaboration on industry trends, information on matters, and newsworthy client work that we can promote.
  • Supports strategy around internal and crisis communications where needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • A minimum of eight (8) years of media and/or public relations and strategic communications experience, preferably at a law firm, media outlet or professional services organization.
  • Existing media relationships and proven ability to build new relationships.
  • Strong news sense and understanding of what it takes to generate impactful media coverage and how to measure ROI, including familiarity with AI-powered analytics tools.
  • Experience in developing and successfully executing communications plans.
  • Experience working in a complex/technical area preferred.
  • Journalism background a plus.
  • Proficiency using Internet sources a must.  Knowledge of PR/Media tools including Meltwater.
  • Proficiency in Windows operating systems and Microsoft Office Suite and/or related software.
  • Ability to provide high-level media relations counsel to attorneys and professional staff on key industry sectors.
  • Experience with relevant sectors including Life Sciences; Financial Services; Consumer Products and Retail; Technology, Telecommunications and Media; and Aerospace, Defense and National Security.
  • Strong relationships with key media contacts in the legal, business, policy and tech sector.  
  • Ability to write and pitch story ideas, client wins, thought leadership, op-eds and brand profile in targeted media outlets
  • Passion for tracking industry trends and activities in order to provide attorneys and firm leadership with fresh ideas on content development and distribution
  • Digital and social media savvy.
  • Exhibit good judgment interacting with attorneys and media/publishing companies.
  • Comfortable interacting with and counseling partners and senior-level employees.
  • Excellent organizational skills; ability to successfully prioritize multiple demands and meet deadlines under pressure.
  • Prior supervisory experience.

The anticipated base salary for this position is $125,760 to $175,000.  The actual base salary offered will depend on a variety of factors, including without limitation, the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and if applicable, the location in which the applicant lives and/or from which they will be performing the job.
