Former Executive Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey Joins Arnold & Porter’s White Collar Practice

Enforcement Edge: Shining Light on Government Enforcement

Arnold & Porter’s White Collar Defense & Investigations practice landed another high-ranking Assistant U.S. Attorney. Partner Lee Cortes, a first chair trial lawyer and former Executive Assistant U.S. Attorney at the District of New Jersey, brings nearly 20 years’ experience representing clients in complex white collar, civil, and appellate matters.

As the Executive Assistant U.S. Attorney — the office’s third highest position — Lee directed all criminal, civil, and appellate matters. Before his promotion to the front office, Lee served as Chief of the Health Care Fraud Unit, where he led investigations and prosecutions of wide-ranging, complicated health care fraud schemes, violations of the Anti-Kickback Statute (AKS) and the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), as well as civil False Claims Act (FCA) matters. Prior to his role in the Health Care Fraud Unit, Lee was Deputy Chief of the Special Prosecutions Division, where he worked on and supervised public corruption and criminal civil rights matters.

Amid a rise in investigations, Lee’s experience in public service is imperative for clients seeking to understand the government’s approach and the inner workings of criminal and civil enforcement. His arrival bolsters the firm’s Chambers-ranked New Jersey white collar practice, alongside former U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey, Paul Fishman; former Counsel to the U.S. Attorney, John Fietkiewicz; and former Third Circuit judge, Judge Joseph Greenaway.
